British Council: Future Leaders Connect Programme

British Council is seeking applications for its Future Leaders Connect Programme with an aim to provide future leaders with skills and international networks which will improve their ability to make or influence policy changes, leading to long term impact on the social and economic development in their countries and beyond.

The project is being undertaken to support the development of future policy makers in key countries, aiming to help them become exceptional leaders. The Programme is run by the British Council, 10 Spring Gardens, London SW1A 2BN, United Kingdom.

As a part of the programme, those who are selected will be required to travel to the UK from 22 October – 1 November 2018.

Benefits

The costs of travel, accommodation and meals are covered by the British Council and the programme is fully accessible. For those who do not gain one of the exclusive places on the programme, applicants will be invited to be part of the Future Leaders Connect Community where applicant can access a range of free online professional development policy and leadership resources.

Eligibility Criteria

The Programme is open to individuals of the participating countries who meet all the criteria listed below. The participating countries are: Canada, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Mexico, Morocco, Nigeria, Pakistan, Tunisia, UK and the USA.To meet the Eligibility Criteria, listed below, Participants must;Be aged between 18 and 35 years old on the 13 May 2018.Be able to speak English at IELTS level 6 or equivalent (Generally applicant have an effective command of the language despite some inaccuracies, inappropriate usage and misunderstandings. Applicant can use and understand fairly complex language, particularly in familiar situations.)Hold a passport valid for at least 6 months from November 2018.Be based in one of the participating countries. Duration of Tenure, Benefits and Frequency of Meeting

  • Every member of the Youth Advisory Panel will be issued with an appointment letter from the UNFPA Nigeria confirming their membership of the panel
  • Each member will serve voluntarily for 2 years and will not be remunerated.
  • However, expenses related to official travels and other incidental costs will be covered by the UNFPA Nigeria office.
  • Each member can only serve for one tenure, however, membership of the panel will be structured in a way to ensure that at each point, the panel is composed of 50% new and 50% old members to retain institutional memory.
  • Members will have the opportunities to shape policies and projects around the work of UNFPA Nigeria
  • Members shall physically meet 2 to 4 times a year(as budget allows). In addition or as an alternative, members shall also explore the use of technology such as Skype, Blue Jeans, Whatsapp, Google groups etc as appropriate to hold regular meetings or for information sharing.
  • Members will receive an orientation when they are initially appointed to educate them about the work of UNFPA Nigeria, set objectives and clarify expectations. This orientation will be conducted either physically or virtually.

The UNFPA Nigeria-YAP is guided by these specific objectives:

  • The panel will act as an advisory body to UNFPA Nigeria by providing a youth lens to its programs and projects as well as initiating projects that #PutYoungPeopleFirst
  • Develop and implement a Youth engagement strategy that helps to foster a closer collaboration between UNFPA, youth leaders as well as youth organisations in Nigeria
  • Lead advocacy efforts around the mandate of UNFPA especially on promoting young people’s sexual and reproductive health and rights as well as access to family planning

  • Young persons between ages 18 – 35 years as defined by the Nigeria National Youth Policy

Loughborough University Graduate School Development Trust Africa Scholarships 2018/2019 for Study in the UK (100% Tuition Funded)

The Loughborough Doctoral College Development Trust Africa Scholarships, will cover 100% of the course fees for your chosen postgraduate taught course for one year (replacing any Departmental or Loughborough University scholarships or bursaries you may already have been awarded).

The scholarships are being funded through a combination of generous external funding and University funds. The University will award a limited number of scholarships, and the standards required are very high.

Students will be expected to fund their travel and maintenance costs through other sources. Evidence of maintenance funds must be included in the scholarship application.

Eligibility Requirements:

Applications will be initially shortlisted and the final decision on the awards will be made by a selection panel of senior staff of the University. The selection panel will use the following eligibility criteria when assessing applications:

  • Currently domiciled (permanently living) in Africa
  • Evidence of exceptional academic achievement (normally a 1st Class Honours Degree)
  • Commitment to return to their home country on completion of postgraduate programme
  • Evidence of the ability and commitment to making a significant contribution to their home country on their return
  • Full understanding of the costs involved in coming to study and live in the UK
  • Evidence of strong motivation and initiative to secure funds to cover the remainder of the costs involved

University of Oxford Postgraduate Scholarships 2018/19 (Apply for Weidenfeld-Hoffmann Scholarships and Leadership Programme)

Applications are now open for the Oxford-Weidenfeld and Hoffmann Scholarships and Leadership Programme for Full-time graduate degrees at the University of Oxford. This scholarship is part of the Oxford Graduate Scholarships, which were established through a ground-breaking new matched funding initiative to enable the creation of fully-funded scholarships for graduate students of the highest calibre from across the world.

The University contributes 40% of the funds for these scholarships, together with 60% from generous donations provided by supporters of the Weidenfeld-Hoffmann Trust, including Fondation Hoffmann. Fondation Hoffmann is a Swiss-based grant making institution supporting the emergence and expansion of concrete projects which address global problems in today’s societies. The programme was established in 2015 thanks to generous donations from multiple donors to mark the 95th birthday of Lord Weidenfeld. Up to 20 awards would be granted.

The Leadership Programme

The Weidenfeld-Hoffmann Leadership Programme is a unique programme designed to train future leaders. All Weidenfeld-Hoffmann Scholars are required to participate fully in the programme, which consists of around 160 hours of bespoke training.

The Leadership Programme includes:

  • an annual Induction and Robin Hambro Moral Philosophy Seminar – including moderated discussions and workshops on political philosophy and leadership development;
  • practical skills training, including presentation and interview skills, examination and revision techniques, essay and op-ed (‘opposite the editorial page’) writing;
  • a Leadership Forum at the end of the academic year with high profile professionals from business, politics and the non-profit sector;
  • alumni mentoring and numerous networking opportunities throughout the year; and
  • a pro bono project, in which scholars perform public service in a manner of their choosing.

The Scholarship

The scholarship will cover 100% of University and college fees and a grant for living costs (of at least £14,553). Awards are made for the full duration of your fee liability for the agreed course.

You must be applying to start a new graduate course at Oxford.

  • This scholarship is not open to applications from candidates who hold deferred offers to start in 2018-19.

The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) is seeking applications for “Enhancing capacity to apply research evidence in policy for youth engagement in agribusiness and rural economic activities in Africa”.

Scope

They seek research project fellows for the study of Youth Engagement in Agribusiness and Rural Economic Activities in Africa. This is not a one-time invitation for applications, but rather a continuing call for research on this topic in 2018, 2019, and 2020.

Topics

  • Social dynamics: Needs, priorities, aspirations, perceptions, attitudes, perspectives, challenges, social differentiation and characterization, and mapping of youth employment patterns
  • Economic opportunities and youth engagement: Availability and distribution of opportunities, youth occupational choice, and patterns ofengagemenent; effects of differential access to resources on ability to take advantage of available economic opportunities
  • Contexts: National and local contexts affecting economic opportunities and livelihood strategies
  • Rural labor dynamics: Typology of farm and off-farm employment patterns for youth and adults; technology adoption effect of land and other constraints on labor market decisions

Award Information

  • Awards for Research Grants are up to $10,000 (Proposals with a reasonable higher budget can also be selected depending on the quality of the research proposal).
  • Grantees will be supervised by one IITA scientist in close collaboration with their national/university supervisor.
  • Grantees will be offered training on research methodology, data management, and scientific writing;
  • Grantees will be offered training on production of research evidence for policy-making.

Eligibility Criteria

  • The fellowships cover the following countries: Benin, Cameroon, Democratic Republic of Congo, Malawi, Morocco, Nigeria, Rwanda, Tanzania, Senegal, and Zambia.
  • Applicants must not be more than 40 years old at the time of application.
  • Applicants must be an employee of a research institute or university in Africa (applicable to young academics and professionals only); and/or a student registered in a PhD or Master’s program in recognized universities, majoring in agricultural economics, agribusiness, or economics or a related social science, and must have finished their university course work (applicable to students only).
  • The duration of the research should not exceed 6 months.

  • The Global Programme „Programme Migration for Development“ is commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and is being implemented by the Centre for Migration and Development (CIM) – a joint operation of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH (GIZ) and the International Placement Services (ZAV) of the Federal Employment Agency.
  • The overarching objective of the programme is to strengthen the development-relevant contributions of migrants in their countries of origin and improve the framework conditions for legal migration in selected partner countries.
  • The operational focus of the component “Migration Advice” is to provide counselling services pertaining to legal routes of migration to Germany to people interested in emigrating as well as to returning migrants. Additionally, counselling services and information on vocational and educational perspectives and employment opportunities in the country of question will be given.
  • For this purpose, counselling services are tailored to each migrant individually and kept open-ended. Apart from assessing each case individually and subsequent referencing and counselling services, the programme intends to also provide tailored support and qualification measures. Its offers therefore include qualification workshops (e.g. job placement trainings). The services are established to ensure that the country’s target groups are reached, which are comprised of returning migrants as well as citizens who are interested in emigrating and/or career advice. To this end, the intention is to build upon the structure of the “Migrationsberatungszentrum” (Migration Advice and Reintegration Centre) and to extend its operation.
  • The position holder will work under the overall guidance and general supervision of the National Coordinator, Nigeria-German Centre for Jobs, Migration and Reintegration

Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Working closely with the Senior Migration and Reintegration Advisors and under the supervision of the National Coordinator, the social media/ communication Assistant will perform the following duties:
  • Manages the Centre’s social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, and other relevant platforms
  • Engages in social media presence creation on new and emerging social media platforms.
  • Manages social media communications for the Center
  • Creates dynamic written, graphic, and video content on Migration related information
  • Creates content that promotes audience interaction, increases audience presence on company sites, and encourages audience participation ( especially the youth and target group for the program)
  • Works as part of the team to develop large social media campaigns across Nigeria
  • Analyses and reports audience information and demographics, and success of existing social media projects on similar programs
  • Proposes new ideas and concepts for social media content
  • Uses timelines and scheduled content to create a consistent stream of new content for audience interaction while analyzing, managing, and altering schedules where necessary to optimize visits
  • Work closely with the National Coordinator on all content on the Social media platform for the Center
  • Work with the team to develop online migration advisory portal
  • Schedule online appointments
